Archisle International Photographer in Residence 2013: Michelle Sank
Michelle Sank is Archisle International Photographer in Residence 2013. As our first Photographer in Residence and recipient of the Archisle Bursary she will be working on a commission of new work in Jersey from April to September this year. Following a solo exhibition in September, a set of works will join the Archisle collection at the Société Jersiaise Photographic Archive for future public enjoyment.
Michelle Sank was born in Cape Town, South Africa and now lives and works in the UK. The recipient of numerous awards, commissionsand residencies her work is represented in collections and publications in the UK, Europe and the USA.Her photographs reflect a preoccupation with the human condition and to this end can be viewed as social documentary encompassing issues around social and cultural diversity. She is presently Senior Lecturer in Photography at Falmouth University, UK.
Sank describes her work as being concerned with ‘…the notion of encountering, collecting, and re-telling. I am interested in creating sociological landscapes, interplays of human form and location that are significant in their visual, sociological, cultural and psychological nuances.
I work closely with all my subject matter in an empathetic and symbiotic manner often exposing the spectacular in the ordinary. The interweave of portrait and environment is essential in setting up contextual narratives. I see my work as a celebration of the constantly changing moments and phases in life.’ www.michellesank.com
